Harkins Ready Mix was launched to solve a problem – limited availability and inconsistent delivery of ready mix concrete to contractors. In solving that problem, George and David Harkins found they were able to cost-effectively produce precast concrete products and provide additional services to contractors. 

Ready Mix Concrete

Quality graded mixes in volumes sufficient to meet demand is our priority. To that end, we opened our doors with state-of-the-art equipment, including a computer-controlled feed to ensure accurate quantities of fly ash, cement, sand and aggregate, to achieve specific grades. It also calculates the amount of ad mixtures required to give the concrete special properties. The finished batch is then mixed and dumped into mixer trucks where it continues mixing as it is delivered onsite to customers. Air temperature and driving time are calculated so it reaches the customer with at a near-perfect consistency and set-up state. 

Speciality Concrete Mixes

Harkins Ready Mix is certified by the state of Maryland to provide concrete for highway construction. Highway concrete is uniquely graded to meet specifications for conditions like slope, weather, and permeability. Bridge decks, for instance, are permeable to speed up drainage and purposely have air added to allow frequent freezing and melting without cracking. Highway concrete has safety implications, so a state inspector visits the Pittsville batching plant monthly and uses our lab to confirm the quality of their work.

Concrete Precasts

The concrete for our precast products is made the same way, though specific properties vary. These are the steps, landings, parking bumpers, retaining walls, security barriers and other concrete products for which strength and weight is an advantage.
